CT NEWS JUNKIE | Hartford Has Style Fashion Exhibition Turns Pratt Street Into High Fashion Runway

  • Hartford's Pratt Street was decked out Saturday evening for Hartford Has Style: an evening of fashion, art, and dancing. Pratt Street was transformed into a 100-foot red carpet runway, featuring a fashion show and live auction, hosted by Logan Byrnes, Jennifer Wilder-Jackson, and John Motley.

    The event, organized by small businesses on Pratt Street, highlighted not only fashion but community role models as well.

    Clothing and shoes were presented by
    NIRO and That Flavour Boutique. Models for the event were Byrnes, Yvonne Davis, Jennifer DiBella, Oz Griebel, Jerry Long, Hector Rivera, Donna Sodipo, Tara Spain, Sharon Dichand, and Michael Williams. Designers included That Flavour Boutique, Carmen Veal Swimwear, NIRO Boutique's Penniless Snob, Zubair, Hartford Denim Company, and NIRO Couture.

CT NEWS JUNKIE | 200,000 Celebrate UConn Basketball Teams in Victory Parade

  • Sunday's victory parade in Hartford drew more than 200,000 to the city to honor the University of Connecticut's men's and women's basketball teams for winning their respective 2014 NCAA championships.

    Hartford police provided a "conservative" crowd estimate of more than 200,000 and said fans were respectful - not a single arrest was reported. Police said it was the largest crowd anyone can remember in Hartford.

    The event was produced by the Hartford Business Improvement District, in collaboration with the City of Hartford and the State of Connecticut, and a number of civic and business organizations.

  • Red Carpet Experience 2014The 20th annual Red Carpet Experience event at the Spotlight Theatres in Hartford was a raucus success on Sunday, with wall-to-wall people decked out in their best Oscar nominee-themed costumes and black-tie fashions. The event featured a silent auction to benefit AIDS Connecticut (ACT).

    ACT, in partnership with its member agencies, improves the lives of people impacted by HIV through care and supportive services, housing, advocacy, and prevention.

    Other special features included a VIP reception with local luminaries and elected officials from 6-7 pm, red carpet interviews with JAVA's Maryellen Fillo and WTNH's Teresa Dufour, formal or outrageous attire, prizes awarded for Most Glamorous, a signature cocktail called "The Chion Wolf of Front Street" sponsored by Peel Liqueur, large screens, and a private cinema for viewing the 86th Annual Academy Awards.

    Delicious cuisine was provided by DISH Bar & Grill, Front Street Bistro, The G Stream, Half Moon Coffee & Grille Cafe, Max Restaurant Group, NoRA Cupcake Company, Peppercorns Grill, Pond House Cafe, and The Uncommon Cupcake.

    Event Chair was Stephen Jewett of McDowell Jewett Communications, and Co-Founders are Colin McEnroe of WNPR and Peter Shapiro of Peter Shapiro Associates.

    Proceeds from any prints purchased from this album will go to AIDS Connecticut. Thanks for a great evening!

CT NEWS JUNKIE | Inaugural Sandy Hook 5K Draws 15,000 Runners to Hartford

  • SandyHook5K-HartfordThe Sandy Hook 5k Run for the Families in Hartford on Saturday was held in honor of the families of the 26 victims of the Dec. 14, 2012, massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

    About 15,000 runners registered for the event, making it the largest inaugural 5K event in Connecticut.

    The race benificiary was the Sandy Hook School Support Fund, administered by the United Way of Western Connecticut in partnership with Newtown Savings Bank. George Jepsen, among others.
